After years at a cabin on another Minnesota lake, the homeowners made the move to Lake Minnetonka to be closer to the city — settling into this home on 1.4 acres in Crystal Bay, originally built in 1998. The goal from the start was ambitious: turn the house into a true multi-generational home that could comfortably hold the homeowners, their four grown children, and all of the grandchildren. That’s exactly what it became.

The remodel addressed real structural issues along the way — the original stucco exterior had rotted, so the entire house was re-sheathed in new plywood and switched over to Hardie siding, giving it a durable, refreshed lake-cottage look built to last. Robb Whittlef led the interior design, shaping the home’s cottage character throughout.

A few years after the main remodel was complete, the family came back to add a 2,500 square foot guest cottage in 2021 — extra living space and bedrooms built specifically with the grandchildren in mind, so the whole family could keep gathering here for years to come.
